The Bishop's Annual Challenge:

A Partnership in Mission

Empowering grassroots ministry across the Diocese

Introducing the Bishop’s Annual Challenge

What is the Bishop’s Annual Challenge?

The Bishop’s Annual Challenge is a call to to participate in a shared mission across the Diocese that no single parish can accomplish alone. Through this call, we are working to:

  • Help leaders in the mission field launch new ministries.

  • Reach new communities for the Gospel through outreach.

  • Raise up new and healthy leaders, where resources for training and multiplication are needed.

An Invitation to Shared Mission

Dear friends,

Across our Diocese, I see God at work in powerful ways—raising up leaders, opening doors for new ministry, and drawing people to Himself. The Bishop’s Annual Challenge is an invitation to take part in that work together. Through it, we are able to support ministries that form new leaders, reach new communities, and strengthen the life of our churches.

I invite you to join me in this shared mission, trusting that God will use our common effort to extend His Kingdom in ways we could not accomplish alone.

In Christ,

+ Bishop Phil Ashey

What Are Some Active Ministries?

There are active ministries already reaching people, forming leaders, and strengthening the Church, and they need your support!

  • Launching a diocesan youth camp to form future leaders.

  • Equipping leadership to continue reaching 100+ students in the San Diego area through weekly Bible studies and worship.

  • Formation of next generation of clergy and lay leaders in every deanery.

  • Equipping local congregations to start Hispanic-language worshipping communities in Southern California.

  • Planting churches in eldercare communities in Arizona.

How Does the Bishop’s Annual Challenge Work?

The Bishop’s Annual Challenge mobilizes resources to support both diocesan initiatives and parish-based outreach—equipping ministries that expand the Church’s mission across the Diocese.

Through a clear application and review process, funds are distributed to ministries that demonstrate meaningful impact. Each initiative is supported with ongoing accountability and reporting, ensuring faithful stewardship and transparency at every step.

How Can I Join the Work?

The Church is called to more than maintenance. We are called to mission—to reach new people, form new leaders, and step into places where the Gospel is not yet known. The Bishop’s Annual Challenge is your opportunity to take part in that shared work across the Diocese. Your generosity helps launch new ministries, strengthen local churches, and bring the hope of Jesus Christ into communities in real and lasting ways.
